New 2025 TxDOT Crash Data: Texas Truck Accident Injuries Surge

New 2025 TxDOT Crash Data: Texas Truck Accident Injuries Surge

The Texas Department of Transportation’s newly-released 2025 crash statistics confirm what most drivers in the Lone Star State already know: dangerous and deadly truck crashes remain a serious and growing threat on Texas roads.

In 2025, Texas saw the equivalent of more than 100 CMV crashes every day — and 40 people suffering suspected serious or minor injuries every day. And while the total number of crashes involving large trucks, 18-wheelers and other CMVs declined slightly, the number of people suffering the most catastrophic injuries actually increased.

The fact is, dangerous truck crashes have remained stubbornly and alarmingly high in Texas. And for the victims and families involved, these aren’t just statistics. A serious truck crash leaves those in passenger vehicles facing devastating injuries, mounting medical bills, lost income, and lasting or even permanent consequences.

With Billions won, our undefeated Texas truck accident lawyers have repeatedly recovered the largest truck and 18-wheeler accident verdicts and settlements in history for our clients.  Below, we examine the latest TxDOT crash statistics and what you should know if you or a loved one has been seriously injured in a large truck or 18-wheeler accident.

15,000+ Texas Truck Crash Injuries Reported in 2025

Texas continues to see nearly 40,000 commercial motor vehicle crashes every year. And while the Lone Star State saw a slight decrease in crashes in 2025 — a 2.2% decline from 39,393 crashes in 2024 to 38,533 in 2025 — fewer truck crashes did not mean fewer Texans were seriously injured.

The latest TxDOT data reveals several troubling trends:

  • Serious injuries increased: From 1,601 in 2024 to 1,611 in 2025.
  • Minor injuries surged 13% since 2023: From 5,823 in 2023 to 6,148 in 2024 to 6,576 in 2025.
  • More than 15,000 people suffered suspected serious, suspected minor, or possible injuries.
  • Nearly 40% of truck crashes involved an injury.

The human toll is even more alarming when looking at fatalities. At least 528 people were killed in CMV-involved crashes across Texas in 2025, many of those involving large trucks and 18-wheelers — far more than any other state in the nation. In fact, federal crash data shows Texas saw roughly three times as many truck crash fatalities as the next-highest state, Georgia, in 2025.

Where Are Texas Truck Crashes Most Dangerous?

In 2025, the counties with the highest numbers of commercial motor vehicle crashes included:

  • Harris County: 5,913 crashes, 43 fatalities
  • Dallas County: 3,778 crashes, 37 fatalities
  • Bexar County: 2,581 crashes, 16 fatalities
  • Tarrant County: 2,183 crashes, 16 fatalities
  • Midland County: 536 crashes, 11 fatalities
  • Travis County: 648 crashes, 11 fatalities
  • Ector County: 379 crashes, 9 fatalities
  • El Paso County: 1,014 crashes, 7 fatalities

Many of these counties are home to the state’s largest cities, as well as the freight corridors and long-haul routes carrying millions of tons of cargo between Texas ports, petrochemical facilities, refineries, oilfields, warehouses, and border crossings. As commercial traffic increases and congested highways and construction work zones become more common, so does the risk of serious truck crashes in major metropolitan area. Both Houston and Dallas reported more truck-crash fatalities in 2025 than in either of the previous two years.

And the danger isn’t limited to Texas’s major cities. In Midland, serious truck crash injuries more than doubled, jumping from 8 in 2024 to 19 in 2025.

And truck crashes are turning deadlier in smaller counties. In Hardin County, for example, 7 people were killed in just 57 CMV-involved crashes in 2025. Kendall County reported 7 fatalities among 55 crashes, and Leon County reported 9 fatalities among just 85 crashes.

These counties experienced roughly 8 to 13 fatalities for every 100 CMV-involved crashes, compared with less than one fatality per 100 crashes in Harris County. For Texans traveling rural highways and remote oilfield routes alongside heavy commercial traffic, the danger is often greater than statewide crash totals suggest.

What To Do If You Were Injured in a Serious Truck Crash in Texas

If you’ve been involved in a serious semi-truck or 18-wheeler accident, your health and the safety come first. Call 911 immediately and, if it’s safe to do so, remain at the scene until emergency responders arrive. If your vehicle is in immediate danger, get yourself and your passengers to a safe location.

Once you’re safe, it’s critical to act fast and protect your rights — because the trucking company, its attorneys, and insurers will already be working to downplay your injuries and control the narrative.

  • Take photos and video of the crash scene. If you are physically able, photograph and record your vehicle, the truck, the roadway, traffic conditions, skid marks, debris, visible injuries, and anything else that may help document what happened.
  • Get the names and contact information of everyone involved and any witnesses.
  • Document the trucking company and truck. Write down the name of the trucking company, the truck’s DOT number—which is generally displayed on both sides of the truck—and the trucking company’s insurance information.
  • Be honest with police and emergency responders, but do not admit fault. Stick to the facts of what you remember and avoid speculating about what caused the crash.
  • Seek immediate medical treatment. Even if you don’t think you were seriously injured, get evaluated by a medical professional. Adrenaline and shock can mask symptoms after a traumatic crash, and some serious injuries may not become apparent until hours or even days later.

Continue following your doctors’ recommendations after the crash, including attending follow-up appointments and completing prescribed physical therapy. Your medical care is first and foremost about protecting your health and giving you the best opportunity for recovery. It also creates important documentation of your injuries and the treatment you required after the crash.

Most importantly, contact an experienced Texas truck accident lawyer as soon as possible. Trucking companies move fast to avoid responsibility and pay you as little as possible for your injuries and losses.  From hiding important evidence to shifting blame onto you, there’s nothing they won’t do to protect their bottom line.

At Zehl & Associates, we move just as fast to protect your rights. We fight to secure the maximum compensation possible while making sure our clients have access to the best medical care available at no upfront cost.

If a trucking company refuses to take responsibility, we are prepared to take the fight to trial, where we’ve never lost. That’s how we’ve built our reputation: by holding negligent trucking companies fully accountable and fighting until our clients receive the justice and full compensation they deserve.
