Greyhound Bus Driver Released After Pleading Not Guilty to DUI in Jackson, Mississippi Crash

 

A Greyhound bus driver was released from custody yesterday, after pleading “Not Guilty” to Misdemeanor DUI in connection with an accident that left nearly two dozen people injured earlier this week.

Greyhound Bus Overturned Shortly After Leaving Jackson Station

Erika Nixon, 31, had driven just a mile from the Jackson, Mississippi station Wednesday night, when her Georgia-bound Greyhound bus crashed at approximately 8:00 p.m.

According to passengers, the vehicle flipped at least three times after Nixon attempted to merge onto I-55 South from the Pascagoula Street on-ramp in heavy rain.

Emergency responders transferred 22 people to area hospitals.

Although the nature of their injuries has not been disclosed, none are considered life-threatening.

Greyhound Bus Driver Underwent Breathalyzer Test at Crash Scene

Nixon underwent a breathalyzer test at the accident scene, even as rescuers continued to evacuate injured passengers from the bus.

Jackson Police then arrested her for driving under the influence.

Nixon appeared in Municipal Court on Thursday afternoon to enter her plea. The judge presiding over the arraignment granted a secured bond and scheduled her trial within the next 30 days.

She was released following processing.

Greyhound Driver Highlighted Alcohol Consumption on Social Media

Apparently, Nixon can legally drive without a permit and  keep her license while she awaits trial.

According to WBLT-3 in Jackson, Nixon’s Facebook page indicates she began driving for Greyhound in 2015.

Apparently, many of of her posts related to alcohol consumption, including photographs of cans and bottles.

In one photo, Nixon even appeared to have alcohol in her purse when she interviewed with Greyhound.

So far, Greyhound has not commented on the Mississippi bus accident or Nixon’s arrest.
