Adirondack Trailways Bus Crash Along I-80 in New Jersey Tragically Kills Syracuse University Student

 

A Syracuse University student died tragically last Thursday night, when an Adirondack Trailways bus crashed along Interstate 80 near Parsippany, New Jersey.

Dozens of others were injured in the January 24th accident, some critically.

Adirondack Trailways Bus Hit I-80 Median, Went Airborne

According to  the New Jersey State Police, the Adirondack Trailways bus was travelling in the eastbound express lanes on I-80, when it hit the median near Exit 43 in Morris County around 7:30 p.m.

The bus went airborne for a few seconds and hit two other vehicles before it finally came to a stop.

“It was scary when it went on its rear wheels,” one motorist said after witnessing the crash. “Just a horrific, horrific scene.”

21-Year-Old Woman Died After Being Ejected from Bus

A 21-year-old woman was ejected from the bus and landed in oncoming traffic. Sadly, she died at the scene.

A Syracuse University senior, the young woman was returning home to Ozone Park, in Queens, New York the night of the accident.

“Chancellor Kent Syverud and I extend our sincere condolences and sympathy to Brianna’s family, friends, sorority sisters, professors and all those who are mourning this loss,” Syracuse University Dean of Students Rob Hradsky said in a statement issued the following day. “We join our campus community in keeping Brianna, her loved ones and all who knew her in our thoughts and prayers.”

New Jersey Hospitals Treat Over 2 Dozen Crash Victims, Mostly Adirondack Trailways Passengers

Paramedics transferred more than 30 people to area hospitals after the crash, including 21 who were taken to Morristown Medical Center in fair or critical condition.

As of Friday, two remained hospitalized in serious condition, while a third was listed as critical.

St. Clare’s Denville Hospital received three patients, while St. Clare’s Dover Hospital treated two people. They were all released by Friday morning.

EMTs also evaluated 10 people taken to the District 5 Fire House in Parsippany.

Although most of the injured were Adirondack Trailways passengers, police have not confirmed if any other motorists were hurt.

Adirondack Trailways Bus Crash Remains Under Investigation

It’s not clear why the Adirondack Trailways bus hit the I-80 medium last Thursday night. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the New Jersey State Police are investigating the crash.

Based in upstate New York, Adirondack Trailways is a brand of NYTrailways, the largest and longest continuously operating intercity bus carrier in New York State.

NYTrailways belongs to the Trailways Transportation System, a network of 70 independent bus companies operating under a brand licensing agreement.

According to its website, Adirondack Trailways runs routes between Buffalo, Montreal, Albany, and New York City.
