Sandman Hotel Explosion in Fort Worth Likely Caused by Gas Leak

Undefeated Texas Explosion Lawyers

The Sandman Signature hotel explosion that injured 21 in downtown Fort Worth on January 8 was likely caused by a gas leak.

Blast Critically Injures One, Seriously Injures Four

At least 21 people were injured in the explosion, which rocked the 800 block of Houston Street around 3:30 p.m., blowing out the Sandman’s windows and facade onto 8th St. and substantially damaging the ground floor and possibly more of the historic building.

Fourteen people total were rushed to the hospital — one person in critical condition and another four with serious injuries.

Three of the injured were working in the hotel’s restaurant, Musume — which was reportedly under construction and closed to the public with no customers inside — at the time of the blast.  Rescuers found multiple victims trapped inside the restaurant when they arrived at the scene.

Officials continued a search and rescue through the night to ensure no one else was trapped inside, and no other victims were found.

Atmos Pipeline Gas Leak Suspected Cause of Explosion

The Fort Worth Fire Department, which is leading the investigation into the incident, posted to social media to confirm that the hotel was under construction at the time of the explosion, and that the event was likely caused by a gas leak.

Both the FBI and ATF were on the scene as well, but officials have yet to confirm the cause, however.  The Texas Railroad Commission, which regulates natural gas pipelines in the state, has also sent an inspector to the site to investigate the explosion.

Atmos Energy, which provides natural gas to much of North Texas, was also on site to shut off the gas supply on Monday evening and is reportedly looking into the explosion.

Downtown Fort Worth Streets Closed Off as Investigation Continues

As of Tuesday morning, officials were asking residents to stay clear of the Downtown “hot zone” with numerous road closures in place, including:

  • Throckmorton St. closed from W 7th St. to W 9th St.
  • Houston St. closed from W 7th St. to W 9th St.
  • W 8th St. closed from Throckmorton to Main St.
