At least six people were injured in the October 2nd explosion at the nearly completed Holiday Inn Express & Staybridge Suites under construction in downtown Houston. The blast, which erupted around 11:08 a.m. on the 1300 block of Texas Avenue, collapsed the top floor of the 17-story high-rise, sparked a fire, and sent debris raining down onto the sidewalk and street below.

The injured construction crew had been working on a system of tankless water heaters on the 17th floor when the explosion occurred. They were rushed to Memorial Hermann in the Houston Medical Center with severe burns, lacerations, and other serious injuries.

Possible injuries involved may include:

  • Ruptured Eardrums

I was in the Holiday Inn Hotel Explosion. What Should I Do?

If you are among the injured, you likely visited the ER on Thursday and may have already been discharged from inpatient care. But following an explosion of this magnitude — and especially if you are a contractor as many construction workers are today —  there are more important steps you need to take in order to protect yourself should you decide to file a lawsuit and hold those responsible for your injuries fully accountable.

  • Insist on the Medical Care of Your Choice: Even if you don’t think your injuries are severe, a visit to the E.R. ensures the injury is documented promptly. If you do require additional treatment, you have the right to demand follow-up medical care with the healthcare provider of YOUR CHOICE.  You are under no obligation to see doctors and specialists chosen and paid for by your employer or their insurance company.
  • Make a Record of the Incident: As soon as you are able, write down or record everything you remember about the incident that resulted in your injury, including the names and phone numbers of anyone else who witnessed the incident.
  • Preserve Physical Evidence: Preserve the clothing you were wearing and any other physical evidence in your position. Don’t wash any of these items. Store them in a clean plastic bag as soon as possible.
  • Don’t Sign Anything or Make a Recorded Statement: Whatever you do, do not give the hotel operators, energy company, or their insurers a recorded statement, sign ANY paperwork, or accept any money from the company (other than your regular paycheck) before speaking with an experienced personal injury lawyer who has successfully represented injured workers, both in and out of the courtroom.
  • Comply with All Medical Advice: Missing doctors’ appointments and failing to follow medical advice will only provide the responsible party with an excuse to downplay your injuries and deny your valid claims. Also, make sure to keep a written record of your care, including co-pays and the cost of any prescription medications and medical supplies related to your treatment.

No matter how much they promise to “make things right” and “take care of you,” the companies involved and their insurers are only interested in avoiding responsibility for your injuries, blaming you and your co-workers, and limiting your financial recovery to workers compensation.

That’s why it’s crucial that you contact an experienced workplace explosion attorney who has the experience and resources to take on the biggest companies in the world, knows how to locate and preserve evidence you need to prove who was at fault, and won’t hesitate to go to trial if the companies refuse to fully compensate you and your family for all your injuries and damages.

What Caused the Holiday Inn Hotel Explosion?

Officials continue to investigate the official cause of the explosion at the Holiday Inn Express hotel in downtown Houston, but early findings point to several serious safety failures.

Potential contributing factors include:

  • Natural Gas Leak: A leak in a gas pipeline is one of the leading suspected causes of all construction workplace explosions. Even a small rupture can trigger a massive explosion and fire, putting workers, first responders, and the public at risk. National data shows that nearly one-third of all reported gas leaks in the U.S. result in fire, and 13% lead to explosions.
  • Equipment Failure: Investigators have identified a pressure issue involving the hotel’s system of tankless water heaters located on the 17th floors. A failure in these systems can generate dangerous pressure buildups, creating the potential for devastating explosions.
  • Corporate Negligence: Companies responsible for installing, operating, or maintaining natural gas systems and equipment may ultimately be held accountable. Possible parties may include the natural gas distributor or owner and developer behind the Holiday Inn Express project. When corporations cut corners or fail to follow safety protocols, the results can be deadly.

Gas Leaks are Responsible for Hundreds of Explosions in the United States

Gas leaks and aging pipeline infrastructure are two of the main causes behind the growing number of pipeline explosions in Texas and across the U.S. in recent years.

Since 2010, more than 12% of the 3,138 significant gas leak incidents reported nationwide have resulted in explosions, according to the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA). These incidents have injured at least 725 people and claimed 163 lives — many linked to the aging infrastructure of America’s gas pipelines. In Texas alone, leaks along Atmos Energy lines have killed at least nine people and over a dozen contractors and workers have been seriously injured in Centerpoint pipeline explosions.

Sadly, it’s our experience that these accidents are entirely preventable and the large companies involved will do everything possible to avoid paying victims and their families the compensation they are owed.
