Two people were killed when a Tesla Model Y left the roadway and overturned on State Highway 60 in Wharton County, Texas.
Tesla Model Y Crash Kills East Bernard Coach and Teacher
Jeremy Jenkins, 51, East Bernard ISD’s athletic director and head football coach, and his wife, Brandy Jenkins, 46, a teacher at East Bernard Junior High School, were killed in a single-vehicle crash on State Highway 60 near County Road 210, southwest of Houston, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The crash occurred at approximately 10:07 p.m. Saturday, August 15, 2026, when the 2025 Tesla Model Y was traveling northbound on Highway 60. According to DPS, the car approached a curve at a high rate of speed, lost control, and overturned after leaving the roadway.
Both Jenkins and his wife were tragically pronounced dead at the scene. The couple leaves behind three sons.
DPS is continuing to investigate the crash. Authorities have not publicly identified what caused the Tesla to leave the roadway.
East Bernard Community Mourns Loss of Beloved Educators
The deaths of Jeremy and Brandy Jenkins have devastated the East Bernard community, coming just days after the start of the new school year.
Jeremy Jenkins was entering his third season as East Bernard ISD’s athletic director and head football coach. He previously coached at Harmony, Mount Enterprise, and Tenaha, building a reputation for mentoring student-athletes both on and off the field. Brandy Jenkins had recently joined East Bernard Junior High School as a teacher.
East Bernard ISD Superintendent Courtney Hudgins described Jeremy and Brandy as more than their professional titles, remembering them as educators, mentors, friends, and family members. The district has offered support to students and staff as the community grieves their deaths.
The couple’s loss has also been felt across the Texas communities where Jeremy previously coached, including Harmony, Tenaha, and Mount Enterprise.
Did Tesla Technology Play a Role in the Fatal Crash?
The Tesla involved in the Wharton County crash was a 2025 Model Y, a vehicle equipped with Tesla’s driver-assistance technologies. Authorities have not yet confirmed if Autopilot or Full Self-Driving was engaged at the time of the crash.
As DPS investigates how the Tesla left the roadway, investigators will examine a range of potential contributing factors, including the vehicle’s speed, roadway conditions, driver behavior, vehicle systems, available electronic data, and whether any driver-assistance technology was activated.
Tesla vehicles, including the Model Y, are equipped with Autopilot and Full Self-Driving technology.
