The preliminary investigation into last week’s deadly accident at a Concho Resources drilling site in Eddy County, New Mexico suggests the tragic deaths of two Permian Basin oilfield workers may have been the result of electrocution.

Concho Resources Accident Victims Worked for Outside Contractor

Eddy County Sheriff’s deputies were called out to a Concho Resources lease located just off country road 722 and US 285 shortly before 3:00 p.m. on March 4, 2020. Upon arrival, they discovered two workers unconscious and not breathing. Sadly, both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Sheriff’s office later identified the deceased as a 28-year-old man from Roswell and a 24-year-old man from Carlsbad.  While both worked for an outside contractor, authorities have yet to name their employer.

“The health and safety of our employees and others with whom we work is of paramount importance to Concho, and our thoughts are with the individuals’ friends, families and colleagues,” Concho Resources said in a news release issued last Thursday.

Multiple Agencies Investigating Eddy County Oilfield Deaths

The Eddy County Sheriff’s Office was unable to specify the cause of death in the immediate aftermath. With the preliminary investigation  wrapped up, the Office is now characterizing the tragic accident as an apparent electrocution.

The bodies of both men were sent to the Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI) at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque for an autopsy. An official cause of death will likely be identified once the Sheriff’s office receives an official report from OMI. Right now, however, there’s no timeline as to when that could happen.

The New Mexico Environment Department is also investigating the Eddy County fatalities, as is the U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration. Midland, Texas-based Concho Resources launched its own internal review and is cooperating with the agencies’ investigations.
