Zimmer Durom Cup Hip and Zimmer CR Flex Knee Implant Recall Lawyers

The Durom Cup, introduced to the American market in early 2006, was implanted in more than 12,000 patients during its 2 ½ years of use. The cup, known as a Durom Acetabuler Component, is made from a single block of cobalt chromium alloy. Zimmer’s Durom cup was designed for use in younger, more active patients who would most likely outlive other, more conventional hip implants. Unfortunately, a staggering number of these patients experienced significant pain and loss of mobility following the surgery. These excruciating problems can often only be solved by removing the defective cup during a revision surgery and replacing them with a new, functional prosthetic.

Zimmer Suspends Sales of Zimmer Durom Cup

In July of 2008, Zimmer Holdings, the manufacturer of the Durom cup, announced it was removing its product from the U.S. market due to the large number of patient complaints associated with the device. View the full background on status letter. Further, many of the patients initially fitted with the defective Zimmer Durom cup required an additional surgery, known as a revision surgery, soon after in order to live pain-free. Zimmer Refused to Acknowledge Durom Cup Problems

The first hint of trouble for the Zimmer Durom cup hip implant manifested in April of 2008 when Dr. Lawrence Dorr, a respected surgeon and well-paid consultant for Zimmer, publicly warned his fellow orthopedic practitioners about the high rate of Zimmer cup failures experienced by his patients. Following Dr. Dorr’s bold proclamation, numerous other surgeons began reporting similar problems with the Zimmer Durom cup hip implant in their patients.

Upon further investigation using x-ray imaging, Dr. Dorr and other surgeons like him began to realize that the Zimmer hip sockets were separating from the surrounding bone instead of fusing together with it. The resulting movement of the metal Durom cup against bone within the hip socket was causing horrible pain leaving many patients in worse shape than they were before the surgery.

Shockingly, Dr. Dorr had attempted to warn top Zimmer executives about his concerns regarding the Durom cup even earlier in 2008. Unfortunately, according to Dr. Dorr, his protests were completely ignored. In fact, Zimmer went even further and actively blamed Dr. Dorr and physicians like him for improperly implanting the devices, leading to the problems patients were experiencing. Just the idea that Zimmer would turn on its own consultant, an experienced and well-respected surgeon with more than 5,000 hip replacement procedures under his belt, is enough to raise serious questions about the company’s motives. Clearly, Zimmer is more concerned with making money than it is about the health and well-being of its customers. Contact the experienced attorneys at Zehl & Associates PC, today for a free consultation. With more than $150 million in verdicts and settlements in the past 2 years alone, the trial lawyers at Zehl & Associates PC have the knowledge and experience necessary to hold Zimmer accountable for its actions.

Zimmer Stops Sales of Durom Cup

After being ignored by profit-minded Zimmer executives, Dr. Dorr felt he had no choice but to go public in April of 2008 and openly express his concerns to a gathering of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. Over a month later, Zimmer finally announced a formal investigation into Dr. Dorr’s complaint but refused to follow his recommendation that it stop sales of the Durom cup while the study was pending. As a result of this reckless course of action, nearly 1,300 more U.S. patients received the potentially defective Durom cup before the device was eventually removed from the market in July.

Even with the high rate of failure experienced by surgeons across the country during its 2 ½ years of use, Zimmer continues to insist that there is nothing wrong with the Durom Cup. In fact, Zimmer continues to blame any and all problems with the device on the operating physicians.
