Worker Sustained Fatal Injuries Aboard Gulf of Mexico Oil Rig

The deadly incident occurred on February 17, 2018, in an area of the Gulf of Mexico known as West Cameron 215A, about 64 miles south of Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Energy Resources Technology, a Talos subsidiary, was operating the platform.

The deceased was employed by a third-party construction contractor and had been working to remove out-of-service fire equipment from the rig when the accident occurred.

The man later died of his injuries.

Offshore Platform Operator Placed on Probation in 2016

Talos Energy is a Houston, Texas-based independent energy company focused on offshore exploration and production.

The company was founded in 2012 following the merger of two public equity firms, Apollo Global Management and Riverstone Holdings.

Talos would acquire Energy Resources Technology the following year. Just three years later, the subsidiary would plead guilty to violating federal safety and environmental laws in connection with its offshore activities.

As part of a settlement with federal prosecutors, Energy Resources Technology agreed to pay $4.2 million in penalties and was placed on probation for three years.

Last Talos Energy Oil Platform Fatality Reported in 2013

Prior to February, Talos Energy’s most recent offshore platform death had occurred on October 27, 2013, when a contract welder was thrown overboard in an incident aboard another Gulf of Mexico rig.

According to the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE), a number of “key failures” on the part of Talos, Energy Resources Technology, and a third-party contractor contributed to the deadly accident.

Federal regulators had placed Talos Energy on a performance improvement plan several months prior to the October 2013 tragedy.
