Four oilfield contractors are receiving treatment for burns today, following a natural gas explosion at a well near Belle Isle, Louisiana, yesterday afternoon.

Wild Well Control Contractors Were Capping Texas Petroleum Well

The well, operated by Texas Petroleum Investments and located along Little Wax Bayou, approximately 18 miles south of Patterson in St. Mary Parish, had been spewing  natural gas since Sunday.

The crew from Wild Well Control arrived at the site of the blowout on Tuesday and was working to permanently cap the well when a spark triggered the explosion shortly before 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 25th.

Four of the contractors suffered serious burns to their hands and faces.

Contractors Taken to Burn Units in Lafayette and New Orleans

Acadian Ambulance dispatched four medical helicopters and five ground units to Morgan City, Louisiana. Two of the injured workers were airlifted from the scene, one to a burn unit at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Lafayette and the other to a burn unit in New Orleans.

The remaining two injured contractors were taken to New Orleans via ambulance.

So far, officials have not identified the victims or commented on their current condition.

Louisiana Oil Well Explosion Under Investigation

The Louisiana State Police Emergency Response Unit was at the scene with a hazmat unit since Tuesday afternoon. The fire was out by Wednesday evening and never posed a  threat to the public. The Louisiana Department of Environmental Resources is investigating the explosion.
