Distracted Driving Cited in Fatal Wrecker Truck Crash on Houston’s Katy Freeway

 

A deadly crash that shut down a section of Houston’s Katy Freeway yesterday appears to have been caused by a distracted driver.

Heavy Duty Wrecker Truck Collided with Back of Ford Escape

The May 15th accident occurred at roughly 9:45 a.m. in the 15800 block of I-10 Katy Freeway, just east of Highway 6.

According to the Houston Police Department, a Ford Escape SUV was traveling in the eastbound lane of the freeway when it was hit from behind by a heavy-duty wrecker truck.

The SUV then swerved and collided with a black Acura.

68-Year-Old Woman Died at Hospital

The 68-year-old driver of the Ford Escape was transported to a local hospital, where she later died.

Her identity is being withheld pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

Wrecker Truck Driver Distracted Prior to Crash

The driver of the wrecker truck told investigators that he looked away just before the collision.

While a statement from the Houston Police Department indicates that he was at fault, no charges have been filed at this time.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
