Explosion at Aegion Coating Services Plant in Conroe, Texas Seriously Burns 2 Workers

Two workers are recovering from serious burns today, following an explosion at the Aegion Coating Services facility in Conroe, Texas on Thursday afternoon.

High-Voltage Electrical Panel Exploded, Forcing Workers to Evacuate Aegion Coatings Services Plant

The January 24th incident occurred at approximately 1:00 p.m. in an industrial building located on the Aegion Coating Services property at 10625 Jefferson Chemical Road in southeast Conroe.

Apparently, a high-voltage electrical panel exploded and ignited a fire in the west wing of the building. Although fire crews observed heavy smoke when they arrived on scene, they quickly extinguished the blaze.

According to Montgomery County Fire Marshal Jimmy Williams, the blast did not result in the release of any toxic chemicals.

While the explosion and fire forced workers at the Aegion Coatings plant to evacuate the facility, Williams said it was not necessary to evacuate nearby residents.

2 Electricians Hospitalized with Serious Burns

Paramedics transferred two electricians to Hermann Memorial Texas Medical Center in Houston, where they are being treated for serious burns. As of Friday afternoon, both were in stable condition.

The Aegion Coatings Services explosion remains under investigation. Williams confirmed, however, that the injured workers were servicing the high-voltage panel when it blew up.

“The fire did originate in the area of the electrical equipment so we do believe it is related to the electrical work going on,” he said. “So, we are going to be working with the electrical workers to determine the exact cause.”

Headquartered in Conroe, Aegon Coating Services provides protective pipeline coatings and rehab technologies for the mining, oil and gas, and municipal water industries.
