Fatal Fall at Chevron Pascagoula, Mississippi Refinery Tragically Kills Contractor

A contract worker died tragically Tuesday night, following a fatal accident at the Chevron refinery in Pascagoula, Mississippi.

Contractor Fell from Elevated Structure in Refinery Processing Unit

Emergency personnel were called out to the Chevron refinery, located at 250 Industrial Road in Pascagoula, at approximately 7:30 p.m. on October 16th.

The worker, an employee of Performance Contractors, Inc., suffered fatal injuries when he fell from an elevated structure inside the facility’s processing unit.

Chevron’s emergency responders called for an ambulance and attended the stricken contractor until it arrived.

OSHA Investigating Chevron Refinery Death

Details of the accident – including what caused the contractor to fall or how far he fell – have not been made available.

Investigators from the U.S. Occupation Health & Safety Administration (OSHA) arrived at the Chevron refinery Wednesday morning.

However, it could take OSHA up to 6 months to conclude its investigation and make the findings public.

Fatal Fall 3rd Death at Chevron Refinery Since 2007

The Chevron refinery in Pascagoula processes over 14 million gallons of oil per day and employs roughly 1,500 people.

An additional 2,500 contractors work there, as well.

The refinery’s last fatality occurred in November 2013, when a fire broke out on the cracking unit, killing a Chevron employee.

OSHA fined the facility $24,000 in connection with that incident, after its investigation uncovered several safety violations, including some that were deemed serious.

Another Chevron employee died in 2007 after falling from scaffolding.
