2 Injured When 18-Wheeler Sets Off Chain-Reaction Crash Along U.S. 290 in Houston, Texas

Two people were rushed to the hospital yesterday, after an 18-wheeler triggered a chain-reaction crash along U.S. 290 in Houston, Texas.

Dashcam Video Captured Houston 18-Wheeler Crash

The terrifying accident occurred around 11:45 a.m., as the 18-wheeler was heading west on U.S. 290 near Antoine Drive.

A dashcam video captured the exact moment the rig veered into the adjacent lane and clipped a black Ford Focus from behind.

The encounter with the 18-Wheeler sent the Focus careening across the highway, where it struck an SUV. The SUV proceeded to rollover three times, hurting two people inside.

18-Wheeler Driver Charged with Class-C Misdemeanor

Paramedics transferred both accident victims to Memorial Hermann Hospital; however, their injuries aren’t considered life-threatening.

According to the Houston Police Department, the 18-wheeler driver later claimed the Ford Focus was in his blind spot.

Nevertheless, he was charged with changing lanes while unsafe, a Class-C misdemeanor.

Defensive Driving Can Help Avoid 18-Wheeler Crashes

Earlier this year, the American Transportation Research Institute designated the Houston Metro Region as one of the worst truck-congested areas of the United States.

According to Sgt. Thomas Fendia of the Houston Police Department’s Vehicle Crimes Division, drivers must be proactive.

“You never know when somebody else is going to change lanes. You always want to drive defensively, especially around commercial motor vehicles,” Fendia told Click2Houston. “These are thousand-ton vehicles traveling down the road. My first reaction when I see an 18-wheeler is to always keep, like I said, distance from them.”
