Louisiana Football Players Were Returning Home for Summer Break

Jacobi Scott of Denham Springs, Louisiana, and Shelvin Kellar of LaPlace were apparently on their way home  from Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas, on May 8th. Their vehicle was hit while exiting U.S. 59 North onto Loop 390 shortly after 6:00 p.m.

“The preliminary investigation has indicated that two vehicles were traveling together southbound on U.S 59 North with the intention of turning east onto Loop 390,” said Lt. Len Ames of the Marshall Police Department.

“The second vehicle was struck by an 18-wheeler traveling northbound on U.S. 59 North as it crossed the northbound lanes of U.S. 59 towards Loop 390,” he continued.

Both young men died at the scene.

Texas Truck Accident Victims“Two of the Nicest Guys on Campus”

“Jacobi and Shelvin had many friends at Southwestern and have been described by fellow Builders as ‘two of the nicest guys on campus,’” Southwestern College President Brad Andrews said in statement issued Thursday morning.

Scott, a quarterback at Southwestern, transferred from Grambling State University last Fall. Speaking with the Louisiana Advocate, Walker High School principal Jason St. Pierre described Scott as an “exceptional student, exceptional young man” who “represented Walker very well.”

A 2017 graduate, he was named starting quarterback his senior year.  In 2016, Scott led Walker High to a 7-3 record and Class 5A playoff berth, ending the school’s 25-game losing streak in district play.

Kellar was a first-year student at Southwestern and a running back on the Builder football team. He previously played for East St. John High School.

“Deeply saddened by the news of losing a part of the Wildcat family, Shelvin Keller,” an East St. John Twitter post read. “Great player and even better person. Represented what it means to be a Wildcat.”
