Mandeville Man Died at Scene, 4 Others Taken to Hospitals

The April 29th wreck occurred shortly after 8:00 a.m., as four 18-wheelers and a car approached a construction zone on I-10 West near mile-marker 110.7. One semi-truck caught fire and another turned onto its side, blocking all westbound lanes.

Authorities later confirmed that a 37-year-old truck driver from Mandeville, Louisiana, had died at the scene.

Paramedics transferred four others to local hospitals, where they were treated for minor injuries.

I-10 West Shut Down for Hours After Deadly 18-Wheeler Crash

Monday’s fatal 18-wheeler accident closed I-10 West between Henderson and Breaux Bridge for more than eight hours. Traffic along the designated alternate route, U.S. 190 in West Baton Rouge Parish, also remained congested for most of the day.

“It’s been a nightmare,” one motorist travelling from Prairieville to Breaux Bridge told CBS-10. “I mean, we’re just trying to get there. It should’ve been an hour drive and we’ve been on the road now for three hours.”

One lane finally re-opened around 5:00 p.m., but crews continued to remove debris well into the evening.

2nd Fatal 18-Wheeler Accident in I-10 Construction Zone This Year

Yesterday’s tragic crash remains under investigation.

I-10 between Lafayette and the Atchafalaya Basin has been under construction since May 2017. Crews are working to widen the interstate in both directions, while other areas are slated for repaving. The project won’t be completed until the summer of 2020.

Between May 2017 and December 2018, more than 600 motor vehicle accidents occurred along that stretch of I-10. Two people died in the work zone during 2017.

Monday’s incident was the second fatal 18-wheeler crash to occur in the active I-10 construction are this year. Another chain reaction collision near the Louisiana Avenue exit in Lafayette killed two motorists in January, including a beloved volunteer coach for the University of Louisiana – Lafayette softball team.
