Two people were tragically killed yesterday afternoon, when an 18-wheeler spilled a load of gravel along Highway 359 just outside of Tynan, Texas.

Pickup Truck Driver Lost Control on Gravel, Collided with Jeep SUV

The February 18th crash occurred shortly before 3:00 p.m., when an 18-wheeler hauling caliche on 359 West lost the entire load about a mile from Tynan.

Moments later, the driver of a westbound Dodge pickup truck lost control of his vehicle on the gravel-covered highway.

The pickup then crossed into the opposing lane and collided head-on with a Jeep SUV traveling East on 359.

2 Pronounced Dead at Scene, Toddler Among 4 Injured

The 59-year-old man driving the Jeep died at the scene, as did a 61-year-old woman in the rear passenger seat. Both were from Paplote.

Paramedics transferred three other passengers, including a 15-month old child, to Christus Spohn Hospital Shoreline in Corpus Christi.

The driver of the Dodge pickup was also taken to the hospital.

So far, authorities have not identified the injured victims or commented on their condition.

18-Wheeler Cited for Failure to Secure Load

The 18-wheeler driver did not suffer any injuries.

The Texas Department of Safety later cited him for failing to secure his load.

According to the AAA Foundation, roadway debris triggered 200,000 crashes nationwide between 2001 and 2014, resulting in about 39,000 injuries and more than 500 deaths.

Improper maintenance and unsecured loads caused roughly 2/3 of those accidents. In addition, over 1/3 of the deaths occurred when drivers swerved to avoid hitting objects in the road.
