Three Workers Injured in Explosion at Southeast Arkansas Peroxide Manufacturing Plant

Three workers were injured on Wednesday in a chemical explosion at a peroxide manufacturing plant in southeast Arkansas.

The December 6th incident at the United Initiators facility on Phillips Road 311 in Helena-West Helena occurred around 8:15 a.m.

The unidentified employees were transported to Helena Regional Medical Center for treatment. No further information regarding their condition has been made available.

Explosion Resulted from Decomposing Benzoyl Peroxide

More than two dozen firefighters and a HAZMAT team responded to the scene. Fire Chief Reginald Wilson told WREG that there was no fire visible upon their arrival.

The vice president of the United Initiators plant told the Helena World that the injured employees were performing maintenance inside one of the facility’s production units. A decomposition involving benzoyl peroxide occurred, injuring the three workers.

No chemicals were released in the incident.

United Initiators has stopped production at the plant and started an investigation.
