Motor Vehicle Accidents
Our Accident Lawyers are Undefeated at Trial
In the past 5 years alone, the Accident Lawyers at Zehl & Associates have recovered millions in settlements and verdicts on behalf of clients throughout Texas and the United States, including
- 2 of the largest settlements in Texas in 2015
- the #8 largest accident verdict in Texas in 2014
- the largest verdict in R&L Trucking company’s corporate history
- the largest settlement in Oakley Trucking’s corporate history
- the largest verdict in Greyhound Bus Line’s corporate history, and
- the #1 largest accident verdict in Texas in 2012
After a four week trial, for example, our truck accident lawyers recovered $4.2 Million against R&L Carriers, the largest private trucking company in the country. Before trial, the company refused to offer our client over $150,000 in settlement. Our verdict is the largest verdict ever awarded against R&L in the company’s history.
Less than 2 years earlier, our bus accident lawyers recovered $18.8 Million against Greyhound Bus Company on behalf of a bus passenger who injured her lower back when the bus flipped on icy roads.
The verdict, which was the largest verdict ever awarded against Greyhound, was covered by Lawyers USA and news stations all over the country.
Record-Setting Verdicts and Settlements
We’ve been able to achieve these results because we prepare every case as if it’s going to trial, refuse to accept inadequate settlement offers, and devote whatever resources are necessary to ensure that our clients and their families receive the compensation they deserve.

Motor Carrier Safety Regulations & Commercial Vehicles
Commercial vehicles, including buses and 18 wheelers, must comply with numerous regulations set by the federal government. The most comprehensive and detailed of these safety rules are contained in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. These regulations place a number of limitations on the truck driver and his company. It is imperative when hiring a lawyer, that you make sure that he or she has experience working with these regulations and working on cases involving commercial trucks and 18 wheelers.
Under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, truck drivers are required to:
- Get a certain amount of rest before operating the vehicle
- Operate the vehicle for a limited number of hours each day
- Keep a detailed log book that records the number of driving hours each day, departure from one state into another, condition of vehicle, etc.
- Obey weight restrictions
- Maintain truck safety
- Refrain from alcohol and illegal drug use
- Comply with federal regulations that govern the transportation of cargo and hazardous materials
In addition to complying with federal commercial vehicle laws, truck owners are required to maintain at least $750,000 in liability insurance to cover any potential property and personal injury damages.
Investigating & Recreating the Accident
Following serious crashes, trucking companies and other large motor carriers will often begin destroying and concealing evidence that could later be used in a lawsuit to prove that the company or their driver was at fault. To prevent this, our Accident Lawyers immediately send engineers and accident reconstruction experts to the scene to collect evidence and begin reconstructing the collision. This enables us to prove how the collision occurred, how it could have been avoided, and why the other party is responsible for our client’s injuries and damages.
These experts use the evidence from the scene, as well as data obtained from the vehicle’s “black boxes,” to establish that the other driver was violating state and federal traffic law and could and should have avoided the collision.
Once we’ve obtained this evidence, we have a separate team of animators create a visual simulation (or animation) of the collision, which we use to show how could have been prevented during settlement negotiations and trial.
Aiming for Settlement – Ready for Trial
While a majority of our cases are resolved through settlement before trial, our Lawyers are always prepared to take the case to trial when the trucking company or its insurance carrier refuse to offer a settlement that compensates our clients for their injuries and damages.
This approach has distinguished our firm from many other personal injury law firms and allowed us to recover substantial verdicts and settlements for our clients and their families.
