3 Tragically Killed, Multiple Injured When 18-Wheeler Explodes Along I-35 Near Denton Texas

An explosive chain-reaction crash on Interstate 35 near Denton, Texas, tragically killed three motorists last Friday afternoon and left several others injured.

Flat-Bed Truck Was Hauling Over a Dozen Propane Tanks

The Denton Police Department responded to reports of an accident along the northbound lanes of I-35 West at mile-marker 84, just south of the I-35W/I-35E split, shortly before 1:30 p.m. on November 8th.

Four passenger vehicles and two 18-wheelers were caught up in the horrific crash, including a flat-bed truck that was hauling more than a dozen tanks filled with highly-flammable liquid propane. Several of those tanks apparently exploded on impact, with the resulting fire quickly spreading to other vehicles.

“You’re looking at that, and there’s obviously nothing you can do. And I’m thinking there’s no way that like someone can survive that,” one witness told FOX4.  “It was insane. The flames were massive. You couldn’t even really make out whether if it was one truck or some cars or what it really was.”

Three people died at the scene, and three others were rushed to area hospitals. Authorities have yet to identify any of the crash victims; however, media reports indicate that the driver of the flat-bed truck survived the accident.

Speed May Have Contributed to Deadly Denton 18-Wheeler Crash

The northbound lanes of I-35 West were closed for hours between Farm-to-Market Road 2449 and I-35 East, as police in Denton worked to pull apart the vehicles and search for additional victims.

While the cause of last Friday’s deadly crash remains unknown, authorities do have their suspicions.

“At this point, the cause is under investigation and speed may have been a factor,” a spokesperson for the Denton Police Department said on Friday.

So far, it’s not clear if anyone will be charged in connection with the accident.
