At least two people were tragically killed Wednesday morning in a devastating, fiery crash involving an 18-wheeler on Interstate 10 near Highway 6 in west Houston.

18-Wheeler and Passenger Vehicle Involved in Deadly Katy Freeway Crash

The crash occurred shortly before 5:00 a.m. on July 1st in the eastbound lanes of the Katy Freeway (Interstate 10) at State Highway 6. While authorities have released few details about what caused the collision, preliminary reports indicate that an 18-wheeler overturned onto a passenger vehicle, causing it to catch fire.

According to police, both the driver of the 18-wheeler and the driver of the passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Major Traffic Delays After I-10 Shut Down

The collision forced the closure of multiple inbound lanes of Interstate 10 for hours as investigators processed the scene and crews cleared the wreckage. A hazardous materials (HazMat) team also responded to the scene to assist with cleanup following the crash and resulting fire.

The left shoulder, right shoulder, and all main travel lanes were impacted, creating traffic backups stretching for miles.

By approximately 10:45 a.m., officials had reopened the feeder road, though heavy congestion continued throughout the morning on the Katy Freeway west of Houston.

What Causes Fatal 18-Wheeler Rollover Accidents?

Because the investigation is still in its early stages, it is too soon to determine exactly what caused this crash. However, our experience shows that catastrophic truck accidents, including dangerous rollovers, are often the result of multiple preventable safety failures — not just a single mistake behind the wheel.

Our investigations routinely uncover driver fatigue, Hours-of-Service violations, distracted driving, negligent hiring, inadequate training and supervision, inexperienced and unqualified drivers untreated sleep disorders, disqualifying medical conditions, improperly loaded cargo, poor vehicle maintenance, and other violations of federal trucking safety regulations that contributed to the collision.

Why Acting Quickly Matters After a Truck Crash

In serious truck accidents like this, the most important decisions are made in the first hours and days after the crash.

Trucking companies and their insurers deploy rapid-response teams to the scene almost immediately, working to gather evidence, protect their interests, and avoid responsibility.

To protect your rights, it’s critical to act just as quickly.

An experienced truck accident law firm can immediately take steps to:

  • Preserve critical evidence, including black box data, driver logs, and maintenance records
  • Secure dashcam and surveillance footage before it is lost or overwritten
  • Document the scene and vehicle damage
  • Identify all responsible parties, including trucking companies and third-party contractors
  • Prevent companies from shifting blame or discrediting your injuries
  • Fight for the justice and full compensation you deserve and refuse to settle for anything less
