An 11-year-old boy died tragically yesterday morning when a box truck slammed into a disabled vehicle along U.S. Highway 61 in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana.
Box Truck Struck Disabled Lexus Sedan from Behind
The June 23rd crash occurred shortly before 7:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes of U.S. 61 near LA 964.
According to the Louisiana State Police, the boy was in the back seat of a 2003 Lexus ES300 sedan that had experienced engine failure. For reasons that remain unclear, a 2020 Hino box truck driven by a 27-year-old man from Gonzalez collided with the rear of the passenger vehicle.
Lexus Driver, Passenger Hospitalized with Moderate Injuries
The child was apparently unrestrained and suffered fatal injuries. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the accident scene.
Paramedics transferred the driver of the Lexus and a front-seat passenger to a local hospital, where they received treatment for “moderate” injuries. So far, Louisiana State Police have not identified the injured victims or released any further information on their condition. However, they have confirmed that both were also unrestrained at the time of the crash.
Box Truck Driver Arrested on Negligent Homicide, Other Charges
The box truck driver was restrained and suffered only minor injuries. After being medically cleared, he was arrested and booked into the Baton Rouge jail on charges of negligent homicide, negligent injuring, and careless operation.
Although Louisiana State Police do not believe impairment contributed to yesterday’s fatal truck accident, they are awaiting results of toxicology tests on both drivers.
