Burleson County emergency crews responded to reports of an explosion in a rural area east of Caldwell around 3:30 p.m. on January 29th. Oklahoma-based Chesapeake Energy later said a blowout had occurred at the Wendland Daniel well located just off County Road 127 and FM 60.

Initial reports indicated three workers were burned in the explosion and one remained unaccounted for. But authorities later confirmed that the missing contractor had died at the scene for his injuries.

Our Undefeated Oilfield Accident Attorneys are representing the mother of one of the two contractors who was tragically killed, as well as the Eagle contractor who miraculously survived after sustaining third-degree burns to over 60 percent of his body, in connection with the deadly blowout.

Oil Well Explosion Likely Caused by Failure to Utilize Two Barrier System to Kill the Well

Three of the contractors who were transported to burn units in Austin and San Antonio ultimately succumbed to their injuries, making the Chesapeake oil well explosion the worst oilfield disaster since 2017.

“Based on our initial investigation, the explosion appears to have been caused by Chesapeake’s failure to utilize a mechanical and hydrostatic barrier to kill the well prior to beginning workover operations, as required by Chesapeake’s safely policies and American Petroleum Institute (API) standards,” says Zehl & Associates founder, Ryan Zehl.

Both the Texas Railroad Commission and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration have deployed investigators to the scene.
