A large chemical plant on FM 1127 exploded in Shepherd, Texas, on Wednesday morning, November 7, injuring at least one worker and forcing San Jacinto County residents to shelter in place, according to the Houston Chronicle.

This situation is still unfolding just north of Houston, with a plume of black smoke heading toward the Livingston area and the effects of the chemical in the air currently unknown.

Also unknown at this time is what caused the chemical plant explosion. But at least one worker is reportedly injured with burns and is in stable condition at Memorial. 

San Jacinto County Emergency Management alerted the public about the fire via Facebook around 9 a.m. Local authorities have since closed off Highway 59 and other nearby roads, which backed up traffic all the way into Montgomery County. A private school was also evacuated.  

Authorities urge residents who live near Highway 59, from Goodrich to Leggett, to shelter in place and turn off HVAC systems in homes and businesses as soon as possible.
