CenterPoint Energy Pipeline Explosion Injures 5 Contractors in Santa Fe, Texas

A natural gas pipeline owned by CenterPoint Energy exploded last night in Santa Fe, Texas, injuring 5 contract workers, including two who suffered critical burns.

CenterPoint Energy Pipeline Explosion Triggered Hours-Long Fire

The blast erupted shortly after 6:00 p.m. near Avenue M and 24th Street, in a residential area of Santa Fe roughly 40 miles southeast of Houston.

The resulting fire continued to shoot flames into the sky for nearly six hours.

“Turned around and locked my door and all of a sudden I heard the gas go off and I looked over my shoulder and I saw the tarp they had just flying around,” one nearby resident told Click2Houston.

“I heard it, and then not even five minutes after that, I started seeing the flames and then we lost power,” he continued.

2 Severely Burned Contractors Airlifted to Galveston

Life Flight helicopters flew two severely burned workers to UTMB Galveston, where they are currently listed in critical condition.

Three others traveled to UTMB via ambulance. So far, however, the hospital has not released any information regarding their injuries or current status.

Injured Contractors Worked for Dayton Pipeline

It’s not clear why the CenterPoint Energy pipeline exploded.

All five workers were apparently employees of Dayton Pipeline. CenterPoint Energy later confirmed hiring the company to service the gas line.

“CenterPoint Energy crews remain on site, working closely with emergency responders to secure the area and investigate the cause of the incident,” the Texas-based utility said in a statement issued last night. “We would like to thank the City of Santa Fe and all of the emergency responders for their support and assistance.”
