According to multiple sources, at approximately 12:30pm on June 3, 2015, a charter bus rear-ended an 18-wheeler sitting in stopped traffic on Interstate 10 at mile marker 682 near Weimar. Weimar is approximately 90 miles due west of Houston on I-10. The accident reportedly left two people dead and as many as 30 more with injuries. Reports indicate that 10 of the injured passengers have been hospitalized, with at least two suffering serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The impact also reportedly caused the flatbed tractor trailer to collide with an SUV in front of it on the highway in a chain reaction. The SUV driver spoke with news anchors and did not report any injuries. The bus accident reportedly occurred in a construction area as traffic came to a standstill.
Charter Bus Causes Fatal Accident en Route from Laredo to North Carolina
Most news outlets are reporting that the bus, which was labeled “Transportes del Norte,” was operated by Grupo Senda, a Mexican charter company that operates several bus lines serving Mexico and the United States. At least one source is reporting that the bus belongs to a company called Turimex, which operates out of Laredo and appears to be a subsidiary of Grupo Senda. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, Turimex buses have been involved in seven non-fatal accidents in the past two years.
Grupo Senda serves more than 23 million passengers per year and has more than 7,000 employees in Mexico and the United States. It operates in 10 states in the U.S. and has lines connecting Houston and other parts of Texas with northern Mexico.
The bus appears to have been on its way from Laredo to North Carolina at the time of the accident. Those on board were reportedly migrant tobacco workers.
Fatality Victims Identified as Bus Driver and Passenger
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), both individuals killed in the accident were on board the bus at the time of the collision. One of the victims is reported to be the bus driver, 31-year-old Miguel Angel Tobalina-Gonzalez. The second, who was reportedly ejected from the charter bus, has been identified as 34-year-old Roman Juan Domicilio. Their bodies were sent to Travis County for autopsies to determine the specific causes of death.
The injured bus riders were reportedly taken to Columbus Community Hospital and St. Marks Hospital in La Grange. The accident is being investigated by the Weimar Police Department and the Texas Highway Patrol.
