At least a dozen people were injured early Friday morning when a Greyhound bus traveling from Charlotte to Atlanta collided with a dump truck on Interstate 85 in Greenville, South Carolina.
Bus Driver and 11 Passengers Injured in Early Morning I-85 Crash
The crash happened shortly before 1:00 a.m. on Friday, July 25, when the Greyhound bus struck a dump truck on I-85 near Greenville—roughly 150 miles northeast of Atlanta.
According to officials, 11 passengers and the bus driver were transported to a hospital in Atlanta to be treated for injuries.
The 22 remaining passengers were uninjured and taken to the Atlanta Greyhound station by a relief bus. The vehicle had departed from Charlotte, North Carolina, and was carrying 33 people total at the time of the crash.
Passengers Say Driver May Have Fallen Asleep
While the cause of the crash is now under investigation by law enforcement, eyewitnesses say driver fatigue may have been to blame.
“All you hear is a ‘bam’ and everyone screaming,” passenger Nate Nunez told Atlanta News First. “I think she fell asleep while she was driving. I know that’s a terrible mistake, but always forgive—we all make mistakes.”
Given the time of the crash and its nature, fatigue is a very likely contributing factor.
This crash comes just weeks after another Greyhound bus accident in Tennessee left two people dead and dozens injured—raising renewed concerns raising renewed questions about the company’s safety standards and driver screening practices.
Greyhound Has Known About the Dangers of Fatigue for Over a Decade
Greyhound has long been aware of the dangers associated with overnight driving (between the hours of 12 and 6 a.m.). In fact, in 2010, the company hired fatigue experts from Alertness Solutions to study how overnight and irregular shifts impacted driver alertness.
The results were clear: drivers working “night runs” were chronically fatigued and significantly more likely to be involved in fatigue-related crashes.
Despite these findings, Greyhound has continued operating overnight routes without implementing industry-leading fatigue countermeasures, placing passengers at risk in pursuit of profit.
What to Do After a Greyhound Bus Crash
If you or a loved one were injured in a Greyhound bus accident, taking the right steps immediately can mean the difference between a full financial recovery and receiving far less than you deserve.
Follow these steps to protect your health, preserve crucial evidence, and secure your future:
- Report the Accident: Ensure the crash is reported to the local police or highway patrol and request a copy of the accident report.
- Get Medical Attention Immediately: Even if your injuries don’t seem severe, get checked by a doctor. Symptoms like internal bleeding or head trauma may not appear right away.
- Document the Scene: If you’re able, take photos of the accident, your injuries, and road conditions. Get contact information from other passengers or witnesses.
- DO NOT Sign Anything: Avoid giving recorded statements or signing documents from Greyhound or its insurance company until you’ve spoken with a lawyer.
