5 Magellan Midstream Contractors Remain Hospitalized After Corpus Christi Tank Explosion

Five people remain hospitalized this morning, two days after an oil tank exploded and burned seven contractors working at a petroleum plant in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Injured Contractors Worked for Shelton Services

A fire erupted shortly after 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 5th, as seven Shelton Services employees cleaned an above-ground tank at the Magellan Midstream petroleum facility located in the 1800 block of Poth Lane and I-37. The tank exploded about 40 minutes later, sending a plume of thick, black smoke into the air.

Authorities ordered people living around the facility to shelter in place but lifted that order shortly before noon on Saturday. The Texas Commission Environmental Quality was monitoring the air around the fire scene and detected no issues.

5 Hospitalized Contractors Listed in Stable Condition

Paramedics rushed all seven men to area hospitals, including five airlifted to the burn unit at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, four of whom were initially listed in critical condition. Two others were treated at Spohn Shoreline Hospital in Corpus Christi and released that same day.

All five workers being treated in San Antonio were listed in stable condition as of Sunday evening.

“The affected workers are valued members of our company family,” Shelton Services said in a statement. “We are saddened by this event. We are praying for and supporting our injured colleagues and their families.”

Cause of Magellan Midstream Explosion Remains Unknown

The Magellan Midstream facility houses 60 storage tanks and a small refinery that wasn’t impacted by the blast.

So far, it’s not clear what caused Saturday’s explosion. While the storage tank was empty, there was still sludge lying in the bottom. However, it’s not known if that contributed to the incident in any way.

Shelton Services is working with Magellan Midstream and multiple state and local agencies to pinpoint the explosion’s cause.
