Two men severely burned in connection with an explosion at the DAR PRO Solutions recycling plant in Byram, Mississippi, early last week have tragically died from their injuries.
Workers Suffered Thermal Burns at DAR PRO Solutions Plant
The explosion at the DAR PRO Solutions plant in the Greater Jackson Industrial Park near Byram, Mississippi, erupted sometime on August 10th. However, the incident was only disclosed after the workers died from complications associated with thermal burns they suffered in the blast. According to The Clarion-Ledger, the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office, as well as the Byram fire and police departments, weren’t even aware of the explosion when contacted last Friday.
Both victims had been taken to the burn unit at Merit Health Central hospital following the explosion. One of the workers, a 51-year-old man from Vicksburg, Mississippi, apparently died last Thursday evening, August 13th. The second victim, a 56-year-old man whose hometown wasn’t disclosed, passed away the following morning, August 14th.
DAR PRO Solutions Plant Hit With 3 Serious OSHA Violations in 2017
It’s not clear what caused last Monday’s explosion. While officials at the DAR PRO Solutions plant have declined to release any details, they have confirmed that an internal investigation is underway.
DAR PRO Solutions is a subsidiary of Texas-based Darling Ingredients. The Hinds County, Mississippi facility collects and recycles cooking oil and meat by-products for use in the manufacture of dog food.
According to The Clarion-Ledger, the U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) cited the plant for three “serious” violations in 2017. The violations involved a fixed ladder on a plant silo was “not maintained in safe condition,” a mechanical power apparatus, and a powered industrial truck.
DAR PRO Solutions eventually settled with OSHA for $12,604.
