Truck Driving the Nation’s Deadliest Job

Accidents involving 18-wheelers and other heavy trucks killed 3,844 truck drivers in 2017, an increase of 212 over the prior year. When combined with trucker deaths caused by other factors, these crashes made trucking one of the most dangerous jobs in the country, with 26.8 fatalities per 10,000 workers compared to 3.5 deaths per 10,000 workers overall.

The grim trend continued in 2018, when 831 heavy truck and tractor-trailer drivers died on the job – the most among any detailed occupations. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, truck drivers and driver/sales workers had the most work-related deaths of any broad occupation group, at 966.

With 96 fatalities, truck drivers also ranked first for deaths among independent workers in 2018.

In Texas, the occupants of large trucks accounted for 4.7% of all traffic fatalities reported that year – one of the highest percentages in the nation.
