Dump Truck and Charter Bus Collide in Port Arthur, Texas, Leaving 2 Dead Near Louisiana Border

 

Two people died tragically yesterday morning when the charter bus and dump truck they were driving collided near the Causeway Bridge in Port Arthur at the Texas-Louisiana border.

LSJ Trucking Vehicle, Hotard Charter Bus Involved in Fatal Crash

The July 19th accident occurred around 7:15 a.m. along Texas Highway 82 at the southern tip of Pleasure Island. According to the Port Arthur Police Department, the fatal crash involved an LSJ Trucking vehicle and a Hotard charter bus.

Texas 82 at the Causeway Bridge was closed to traffic from Umphrey State Park to the entrance of South Levy Road. Travel was also stopped across the Causeway for hours, with vehicles rerouted along alternate routes to and from Cameron Parish, Louisiana.

“At this point in time, we are still currently conducting an investigation on it,” Deputy Chief Jeremy Houston told 12NewsNow “So, we cannot tell the public exactly how this accident occurred at this point in time.”

Both drivers died at the scene. As of yesterday afternoon, officials were still working to identify the victims and notify their families.

Charter Bus May Have Been En Route to Louisiana Refinery

Media reports suggest the bus might have been on its way to pick up workers at the Cheniere Energy refinery in Louisiana. Although that has not yet been confirmed, refinery management did issue a statement shortly after the crash.

“While authorities continue to investigate this tragic crash, we send our condolences to the family and friends of those involved in this unfortunate incident,” the statement read.

According to data from the U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Division obtained by 12NewsNow, Beaumont, Texas-based LSJ Trucking has had one crash that resulted in an injury reported during the past two years.

Louisiana-based Hotard Coaches, Inc. has had no fatalities or injuries reported.

The Criminal Investigations Division of the Port Arthur Police Department is investigating yesterday’s fatal wreck.
