Two young children died tragically and eight other spectators were injured on Saturday when a racer crashed his vehicle during an event in Kerrville, Texas.

Amateur Racer Lost Control at Kerrville-Kerr County Airport

The October 24th accident occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. as nearly 3,000 spectators were gathered to watch Airport Race Wars 2, a drag race for amateur drivers held at the Kerrville-Kerr County Airport.

According to witnesses, one of the participating drivers lost control of his car and left the track. He then struck several parked vehicles before his car plowed into the crowd and finally came to rest against a trailer.

A  6-year-old boy was confirmed dead at the scene. An  8-year-old boy died after arriving at the hospital.

4 Adults Airlifted to Hospitals in San Antonio and Austin

Medical helicopters transferred two critically injured women, ages 27 and 46, to San Antonio Medical Center. The 34-year-old racecar driver was also flown to San Antonio, where he was last listed as stable. The condition of a 26-year-old man airlifted to Austin’s Dell Seaton Medical Center remains unknown.

Two additional children – a 4-year-old boy and a 3-month-old girl — were taken to Peterson Regional Medical Center in Kerrville for precautionary evaluations. Paramedics also treated two other adults for minor injuries at the scene.

Inadequate Safety Barriers May Have Factored in Deadly Crash

Airport Race Wars 2 was sponsored by Flyin’ Diesel Performance, an auto customization shop located next to the airport. The Kerrville Convention and Visitors Bureau’s website promoted the event as an “action-packed, family-friendly day” in which fans could watch the “fastest drag cars compete for over $8000 in total prizes.”

So far, it’s not known what caused the driver to lose control of his vehicle. But according to a freelance journalist covering the race for the Kerr County Lead, the area reserved for spectators was just 30 feet from the runway serving as the track. And while some safety barriers lined the route, they did not extend to the end.

“Even the pro guys lose control, so you put this with amateur guys, and you’re going to have a problem,” he told KSAT.com. “So, I thought to myself; there’s a lot of little issues here that need to be addressed need to be buttoned up before this goes on,”
