One Dead After 18-Wheeler Loses Trailer Near Tyler, Texas

One person died tragically yesterday morning after an 18-wheeler lost its trailer and triggered a multi-vehicle crash in Smith County, Texas.

Lemonade Stand Trailer Detached on Toll 49, Crossed Center Line

The March 8th accident occurred around 9:15 a.m., as a 2004 Freightliner semi-truck towing a lemonade stand trailer was headed south on Toll 49, about 5 miles northwest of Tyler. The trailer somehow became detached from the truck and crossed into the northbound lane.

The trailer then proceeded to collide with a northbound 2005 Toyota Tundra pickup truck driven by a 49-year-old Tyler woman. A 2019 Land Rover SUV driven by a 42-year-old Houston woman was traveling behind the pickup and crashed into the back of the runaway trailer.

Sadly, the driver of the Toyota Tundra was pronounced dead at the accident scene.

The woman driving the Land Rover was transferred to Christus Trinity Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler. Authorities have not released any information regarding the nature of her injures, but she was last listed in stable condition.

The 18-wheeler driver, a 38-year-old man from Hughes Springs, was not hurt.

So far, it’s not clear what caused the trailer to detach from the Freightliner truck. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the fatal crash remains under investigation.
