Two Contractors Hurt During Construction of Mariner East 2 Pipeline in Pennsylvania

A construction accident on the Mariner East 2 Pipeline project outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, sent two contract workers to the hospital late Sunday night.

Cleaning Equipment Struck Precision Pipeline Employees

The December 9th accident occurred shortly after 11:15 p.m., in Penn Township, Westmoreland County, in the southwest part of the state.

Apparently, cleaning equipment called a “pig” struck the workers as they attempted to pull it through the 21-inch pipeline.

A woman was treated at a local hospital and released. Her male co-worker, however, suffered a broken arm and remains hospitalized.

According to a spokesperson for the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration, both victims worked for Precision Pipeline of Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

Sunoco Logistics Fined $12.6 Million for Mariner East 2 Violations

Mariner East 2 runs the width of Pennsylvania. Once operational, it will transport natural gas liquids from the Marcellus Shale to a port near Philadelphia.

Sunoco Logistics, a subsidiary of Dallas, Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners, expects to activate the pipeline sometime next year.

The  Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection halted construction on Mariner East 2 for a 30-day period last year because of repeated violations, including dozens of  drilling-fluid spills.

In addition, the Department fined Sunoco $12.6 million for “willful and egregious” conduct.

Energy Transfer Pipeline Explosion in Beaver County, Pennsylvania

Unfortunately, Mariner East 2 is just one of several troubled projects that Energy Transfer is pursuing in the state.

In September, for example, a section of the Revolution Pipeline exploded in southwestern Pennsylvania, destroying a home and two other buildings in Center Township, Beaver County.

Energy Transfer built Revolution to supply Mariner East 2, as well as its Rover Pipeline. According to media reports, the company activated Revolution just one week before the blast.

Energy Transfer Partners operates pipelines throughout the United States, including the  24-inch line that exploded outside the company’s Waha Gas Processing Plant in Coyanosa,Texas, on November 23rd.

The Coyanosa pipeline explosion triggered a massive fire and  injured two contractors.

That incident remains under investigation.
