Texas Family Shaken After Recalled Samsung Washer Explodes Inside Irving Home

The simple act of washing a load of laundry nearly turned tragic this past weekend, after a Samsung washer exploded inside an Irving, Texas home.

“How Can a Washing Machine Just Blow Up?”

Faisal Nuree told WFAA-TV that his wife had just started a load of laundry when the Samsung top-loading washer exploded without warning.

“Suddenly, it was a boom sound, and my wife thought maybe something had fallen from the sky,” he said.

The force of the blast blew the top of the washer and pushed the unit away from the wall.

Fortunately, no one was hurt.

“If people were here, especially my kids, it could have been deadly,” Mr. Nuree said. “How can a washing machine just blow up?”

At Least 9 People Injured by Exploding Samsung Washers

Exploding Samsung washing machines have caused injuries before.

In fact, the company recalled nearly 2.8 million top-loading units in 2016 after at least 9 people suffered impact injuries, including a broken jaw and fractured shoulder, as a result of an exploding Samsung washer.

According to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC), the problem was caused by unbalanced drums that can separate from the washer.

If this occurs, the drum can generate enough force to cause other parts of the washer to detach or even launch from the machine.

In addition to the 9 injuries, the CPSC received more than 700 reports of Samsung washing machines experiencing excessive vibration or the top detaching from the washing machine chassis.

Samsung Washer Recall Included 34 Models

The Samsung washing machine recall affected 34 models of top-washing units, including the model that exploded on Saturday in Irving, Texas.

However, Mr. Nuree said he never received a recall notification from Samsung.

The appliances were sold nationwide at Best Buy, The Home Depot, Lowes, Sears and other home appliance stores from March 2011 to November 2016.

It’s not clear how many recalled washing machines are still in service.

Customers who own one of the affected Samsung washers are urged to contact the company to arrange for either:

  • A free in-home repair;
  • A rebate to be applied towards the purchase of a new Samsung or other brand washing machine, along with free installation of the new unit and removal of old unit; or
  • A full refund for consumers who purchased their washing machine within the past 30 days of the recall announcement.
