Tow Truck Passenger Tragically Killed in Collision With 18-Wheeler Along I-35 Near San Antonio, Texas

A tow truck passenger was tragically killed on Wednesday night, following a catastrophic collision with an 18-wheeler along I-35 near San Antonio, Texas.

18-Wheeler Landed on Top of Heavy Duty Tow Truck

The November 29th accident occurred around 9:15 p.m., when an 18-wheeler crashed into the back of a heavy duty tow truck as it was pulling a disabled bobtail truck in the southbound lanes of I-35.

“Apparently, this heavy-duty tow truck was slowing down for a work convoy, when a driver of a semi towing a trailer rear-ended this heavy-duty tow truck, thus practically landing on top of the cab,” said Officer Carlos Ortiz of the San Antonio Police Department.

Some reports, however, indicate that the tow truck changed lanes in front of the 18-wheeler.

Tow Truck Passenger Tragically Died of Positional Asphyxia

The weight of the semi truck crushed the tow truck, trapping 44-year-old Kevin Flye of San Antonio inside. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office has since indicated that Flye died of positional asphyxia.

“The driver from the bottom (vehicle) had a head injury,” one witness told MySanAntonio.com. “He had a lot of blood.”

The drivers of the tow truck and 18-wheeler were both taken to nearby hospitals, where they were reported to be in stable condition. They have not been identified.
