Multiple Serious Injuries Reported After Rowlett, Texas 18-Wheeler Crash

Several people were rushed to the hospital early this morning after two 18-wheelers jackknifed and set off a multi-vehicle crash along I-30 in Rowlett, Texas.

18-Wheelers Jackknifed on Lake Ray Hubbard Bridge

The August 17th accident occurred shortly before 3:00 a.m. as the two rigs were heading west on the I-30 bridge over Lake Ray Hubbard, near the Dalrock Road exit.

According to the Rowlett Police Department, one of the 18-wheelers struck a car on the side of the road. The second rig then proceeded to hit the first semi-truck before jackknifing in the westbound lanes of the highway.

The first 18-wheeler then careened across the median, where it jackknifed and collided with two vehicles that had been traveling east on I-30.

2 Victims Airlifted to Local Hospital

There are no fatalities connected with this morning’s accident. But reports indicate there were multiple serious injuries, and at least two people were airlifted from the scene. So far, authorities have not identified any of the victims or commented on the nature of their injuries.

The eastbound and westbound lanes of I-30 have been closed to allow crews time to clean-up wreckage and spilled fuel. That closure will likely remain in effect for several hours, impacting this morning’s rush hour.

While officials are still working to determine what caused the accident, media outlets have suggested a wet roadway might have contributed to the crash.

About Jackknife 18-Wheeler Crashes

According to the National Center for Statistics and Analysis, jackknife crashes account for 10% of all trucking-related deaths.

When a semi-truck jackknifes, there’s very little the driver can do to control their vehicle. The momentum of the crash may propel the truck across the roadway, possibly into the opposing lane of traffic, as was the case in Rowlett.

Jackknife 18-wheeler crashes are typically the result of speeding, improper braking, steering errors, improperly loaded cargo, mechanical failures, or fatigued and impaired drivers.
