An 18-wheeler accident in Waco, Texas has resulted in the tragic deaths of three people, including a child.
The violent collision of four 18-wheelers and two passenger vehicles occurred around 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 11th, along northbound Interstate 35 under the Valley Mills Drive overpass. Those killed included a woman and child in one of the passenger vehicles, as well as a truck driver.
Violent 18-Wheeler Collision Followed by Fire and Explosion
According to witnesses, traffic caused one of the 18-wheelers and two passenger cars to slow. A second big rig that was fully weighted with pea gravel crashed into one of the cars, sending the two vehicles under the first 18-wheeler. The driver of the second truck was among the fatalities.
“There was an immediate fire, literally instantaneous once he hit, and he hit so hard, the cab of his truck that rear-ended everyone was crushed instantaneously,” witness Justin Bradshaw told KWTX.
“The fire was too severe to render aid, the heat was pretty intense,” he continued. “It kinda takes your breath away when you see it, the fire was so intense, it literally melted the rig.”
Two other tractor trailers sustained minor damage in the crash. Five people – the drivers of three of the trucks and two men in the other passenger vehicle – survived.
An unprecedented 13 units and some 40 personnel from the Waco Fire Department responded to the scene. The emergency was contained by 3:30 p.m.
Both lanes of I-35 near the Valley Mills overpass were closed for several hours. The overpass from South Valley Mills Drive onto northbound I-35 sustained structural damage due to the heat of the fire. It is expected to remain closed until inspections are completed.
