One person was tragically killed and multiple others were injured—at least two critically—after a devastating chain-reaction crash involving 10 vehicles shut down a major stretch of I-10 in Chambers County on Thursday morning.

Fatal Crash Involved 10 Vehicles and a Tanker Truck Rollover

The crash occurred at approximately 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 19, in the eastbound lanes of I-10 near State Highway 61.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the collision involved at least ten vehicles, including a large tanker truck that overturned during the incident and was left straddling the median.

Authorities have confirmed that one person lost their life, while two others were airlifted or transported in critical condition. Several additional victims were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at the scene or nearby hospitals.

Hazmat Situation Forces Closure of I-10 Eastbound and Westbound Lanes

The tanker crash triggered a hazardous materials response, forcing officials to shut down both eastbound and westbound lanes of I-10 for several hours.

Drivers were urged to avoid the area as emergency crews worked to contain the spill, assess potential environmental risks, and safely clear the wreckage. No ongoing safety risks were reported, though traffic quickly backed up for miles as drivers were urged to avoid the area.

As of Thursday afternoon, lanes remained closed with significant delays.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Cause of Crash Under Investigation: Early Reports & Common Factors

At this stage, investigators have not released an official cause of the crash.

However, early witness comments and community reports point to several possible contributing factors — many of which are commonly seen in serious, multi-vehicle highway collisions. Witnesses have suggested that vehicles may have been stopped on the shoulder or that a tire blowout triggered the crash, while others raised concerns about the dangerous 75 MPH speed limit.

These reports remain unconfirmed, and a full investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety will determine the official cause.

What is already clear is that crashes like this are almost always preventable.

In our experience handling catastrophic truck accident cases, multi-vehicle collisions of this magnitude rarely stem from a single issue. Instead, they are typically the result of preventable failures such as:

  • Driver fatigue and hours-of-service violations
  • Driver distraction or inattention
  • Mechanical failures, including tire blowouts or brake defects
  • Negligent hiring, training, or supervision by trucking companies
  • Inexperienced and unqualified drivers behind the wheel of commercial vehicles
  • Speeding or driving too fast for traffic and road conditions

When any of these factors are present, especially at highway speeds, the margin for error disappears. And when a fully loaded tanker truck is involved, the danger increases significantly due to the vehicle’s weight and size alone, let alone the potential for hazardous material exposure.

Why Acting Quickly After a Truck Accident Matters

In serious truck accidents like this, the most important decisions are made in the first hours and days after the crash.

Trucking companies and their insurers deploy rapid-response teams to the scene almost immediately, working to gather evidence, protect their interests, and avoid responsibility.

To protect your rights, it’s critical to act just as quickly.

An experienced truck accident law firm can immediately take steps to:

  • Preserve critical evidence, including black box data, driver logs, and maintenance records
  • Secure dashcam and surveillance footage before it is lost or overwritten
  • Document the scene and vehicle damage
  • Identify all responsible parties, including trucking companies and third-party contractors
  • Prevent companies from shifting blame or discrediting your injuries
  • Fight for the justice and full compensation you deserve and refuse to settle for anything less
