How to Drive Safety through an Intersection

Obviously, Bexar County motorists, like drivers anywhere, must remain alert and aware of their surroundings when proceeding through an intersection, especially one of the area’s many loops and interchanges:

  • Make sure you are in the correct lane when approaching an intersection.
  • Be aware of other driver’s “blind spots” and stay out of them.
  • Always signal your turn, so other drivers know your intentions.
  • Avoid distractions like loud music or conversation, stay off your cell phone, don’t apply makeup or eat behind the wheel, or tune your radio. Keep your hands on the wheel and be prepared to stop suddenly.
  • Match the pace of the vehicle in front of you when slowing down. Keep an eye on their brake lights so you can anticipate when they’re going to reduce their speed and when they have come to a complete stop.
  • Do not tailgate or rush the light. Not only does this increase the likelihood of a crash should the vehicle in front of you stop suddenly, but it also impairs your vision and prevents you from predicting traffic if you’re tailgating behind a larger vehicle.
  • Keep a safe distance between your car and the vehicle in front of you – one car length is recommended – when pulling up to an intersection. This will prevent your vehicle from crashing into the one in front in the event you’re rear-ended.
  • As you approach the intersection, be aware of stoplights, stop signs, turning lights and restrictions, one-way signs, roadblocks or construction, pedestrians and crosswalks, and bike lanes, as well as anything that could cause a collision.
  • Be alert to vehicles in front of you, behind you, beside you, and in oncoming traffic. Then look both ways to see where other vehicles are and what their intentions are at the intersection.
  • Keep your wheel straight and your foot on the brake while waiting to cross the intersection.
