3 Contractors Transported to Hospital With Burns
Shortly before 9:45 p.m. on Thursday, February 12, emergency crews responded to reports of burned workers at the ExxonMobil Beaumont Refinery. The injured workers were transported by ambulance to CHRISTUS St. Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.
Heavy fog in the area reportedly prevented a helicopter airlift.
At this time, officials have not released details regarding what caused the workers’ burn injuries. The incident remains under investigation.
ExxonMobil Beaumont’s History of Refinery Accidents
The ExxonMobil Beaumont Refinery is part of a massive 2,700-acre industrial complex, employing more than 2,000 full-time employees and an additional 3,000 contractors, with a total crude processing capacity of over 630,000 barrels per day.
Given the scale and inherent dangers of refinery operations, worker safety should be paramount. Yet this is not the first time workers at the Beaumont facility have been seriously or fatally injured.
2022: A contractor was seriously injured in a fall from scaffolding
2022; A contractor died in connection with a railcar accident at the ExxonMobil Beaumont Lubricant Blending and Packaging Plant
2017: A contractor was tragically killed after being struck in the head by a pipe. She was employed as a pipefitter’s assistant by Echo Maintenance, LLC, a company performing construction at the facility.
2016: A contract worker for Altair Strickland also died at the ExxonMobil Beaumont Refinery after being struck by a falling pipe.
2013: In the worst incident to date, a flash fire at the refinery injured four contract workers in April 2013, including two who later died.
These incidents raise serious questions about the company’s commitment to safety.
Common Causes of Refinery Burn Injuries
While the exact cause of this incident has not yet been determined, burn injuries at oil refineries frequently stem from known and preventable hazards, including:
- Flash fires caused by the ignition of flammable gases or vapors
- Equipment failures, such as ruptured pipes, valves, or pressurized systems
- Hot work incidents, including welding or cutting near combustible materials
- Chemical exposure to corrosive or volatile substances
- Inadequate lockout/tagout procedures during maintenance or repairs
- Poor communication or safety coordination between multiple contractors on site
