A contract worker was tragically killed on Sunday, August 3rd, in an industrial accident at the Golden Pass LNG export terminal in Sabine Pass, Texas.
50-Year-Old McDermott Contractor Identified as Victim
The fatal incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. at the facility, located at 3752 S Gulfway Dr., just south of Port Arthur.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the victim was a 50-year-old man from Odessa, Texas, employed through McDermott, a third-party engineering and construction contractor serving the oil and gas industry.
While officials have confirmed the fatal injuries were not caused by a fall, the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear. An investigation is currently underway.
OSHA Opens Investigation Into Deadly Plant Accident
On Monday, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) opened its own investigation into the fatal accident at Golden Pass LNG. It is unknown how long that investigation will take or when results may be released.
This tragedy comes just months after three contract workers were killed in a preventable incident at the nearby Port Arthur LNG facility—a scaffolding collapse that shocked the local community and raised serious safety concerns across the Gulf Coast.
Our firm is proudly representing three of the victims of the Port Arthur LNG disaster, including the families of two workers who lost their lives.
About Golden Pass LNG
The Golden Pass LNG project is a $10 billion liquefied natural gas export terminal being developed through a partnership between QatarEnergy and ExxonMobil. Originally expected to produce its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) in 2025, the project timeline was extended in 2024 following a request to U.S. regulators, pushing expected completion to 2029.
Once finished, the facility will add liquefaction and export capabilities to the existing Golden Pass import terminal, with the capacity to export up to 18 million tons of LNG per year.
