Five contractors were hospitalized last night following a chemical plant explosion in Sulphur, Louisiana.

Flash Fire Erupted at Westlake Chemical’s Petro Complex 2 Unit

The September 27th explosion erupted shortly after 11:00 p.m. at Westlake Chemical’s Petro Complex 2 Unit, an ethylene production facility located along State Highway 108, roughly 21 miles from Lake Charles.

A video later posted to social media showed plumes of smoke drifting into the sky after the blast. Several commenters reported they had heard and felt the explosion in their homes.

A Westlake Chemical spokesperson characterized the blast as a flash fire and said there was no sustained fire. He also indicated the facility was shut for maintenance when the incident occurred.

Contractor Reportedly Burned Over 50% of His Body

Five of the contractors working on the turnaround were rushed to a local hospital, including two later transferred to hospitals in Hammond and Lafayette. All Westlake Chemical employees have been accounted for.

The injured contractors and their employer remain unidentified. There’s also no word on the exact nature of their injuries or their current conditions; however, some media outlets have reported that one of the workers sustained severe burns over half his body.
