At approximately 4 a.m. today, 4 workers were killed at the Dupont plant located in Laporte, Texas when a chemical release exposed them to methyl mercaptan in the crop protection unit. A fifth worker that was also exposed to the toxic substance is alive but remains hospitalized at Bayshore Hospital so that medical officials can continue to monitor his condition.
Methyl mercaptan is typically used in the industry to odorize natural gas so that it can be easily recognized if accidentally released into the air. The odor is strong and smells similar to rotting fish or eggs. While the chemical was contained by 6 a.m., according to officials, it was far too late to save the 4 workers that had already been exposed. The City of Laporte has declared that the chemical release poses no risk to the surrounding community.
According to a statement from Dupont, the release “never should have happened.”
