An 18-wheeler hauling bricks jackknifed across U.S. 290 in Houston, Texas, this morning after losing its load, sparking a devastating chain-reaction crash involving at least nine vehicles and leaving three people seriously injured.

At Least 9 Vehicles Involved in 18-Wheeler Chain Reaction Crash

The crash happened around 7:43 a.m. on Monday, August 25, on U.S. 290 (Northwest Freeway) westbound near the West Road exit in the Jersey Village area. According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, an 18-wheeler hauling a heavy load of bricks lost control after being struck on its steering axle by a Toyota Camry, slammed into the median, and jackknifed across the highway, with its trailer sliding on top of the wall.

The force of the jackknife sent the truck’s trailer into the HOV lane, leaving oncoming drivers with no way to avoid a collision. One vehicle was struck head-on by the trailer, catastrophically injuring both the driver and passenger inside, and setting off a massive chain reaction involving at least nine vehicles as thousands of bricks spilled across the roadway.

3 Seriously Injured and Transported to Local Hospitals

Emergency crews airlifted the female driver of the HOV vehicle to a local hospital with a fractured spine and a brain bleed. Her passenger, who also sustained a fractured spine and a broken leg, was transported by ambulance for emergency treatment, along with the 18-wheeler’s driver.

All westbound lanes of U.S. 290 remained shut down for hours as Texas Department of Transportation crews responded to the scene and worked to remove debris.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office stated that it would need two industrial tow trucks in order to pull the 18-wheeler off of the median wall.

Common Causes of 18-Wheeler Lost Load Crashes

Crashes like this morning’s are not “accidents.” They’re almost always the result of trucking companies and drivers putting speed and profits ahead of safety — making these crashes entirely preventable.

Lost loads often happen when companies fail to properly secure cargo, hire inexperienced drivers, or push truckers to drive fatigued and distracted.

When an 18-wheeler jackknifes or spills cargo across the roadway, other drivers are left with little to no time to react and tragically bear the brunt of the impact.

The most common causes of preventable lost load and jackknife crashes include:

  • Failing to properly secure cargo
  • Fatigue and drowsy driving
  • Distracted driving
  • Speeding
  • Hiring and failing to properly train unqualified drivers

While the exact causes of this morning’s crash remain under investigation, Texas law allows you to pursue justice even if another party is partly, but not fully, at fault. Under Texas’s comparative negligence laws, you can still recover compensation as long as you were less than 51% responsible.

However, trucking companies and their insurers will stop at nothing to avoid responsibility after a catastrophic crash. Only the best Houston truck accident lawyers know exactly how to hold them fully accountable and secure the recovery you and your family deserve.
