A worker at a Trinity Industries facility in Longview, Texas, has died after suffering severe burn injuries in a workplace fire.
Worker Suffers Fatal Burns in Incident at TrinityRail Facility
The incident occurred at approximately 10:27 a.m. on March 30th at the company’s tank car production facility, TrinityRail, at 708 Jordan Valley Road.
Emergency crews responded to reports of a serious burn injury, where at least one worker sustained critical burns. First responders treated and stabilized the injured employee at the scene before transporting him to a local hospital for emergency care.
Despite those efforts, the worker later died as a result of his injuries.
Cause of Fire Under Investigation
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by local authorities and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Initial findings from law enforcement indicate no signs of suspicious activity connected to the incident. Officials reported that crews conducted atmospheric testing on a tank car at the scene of the accident — a confined space that was ventilated for approximately 30 minutes following the fire.
The fire marshal’s office and OSHA both continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the worker’s fatal injuries. At this time, officials have not indicated whether similar incidents have previously occurred at the facility.
Dangers of Tank Cars and Confined Spaces in Industrial Settings
Industrial tanks, railcars, and similar confined spaces can quickly become dangerous if flammable vapors, limited ventilation, or hazardous materials are present.
Because of these risks, employers must follow strict safety protocols designed to protect workers who enter or perform work around tanks and similar equipment. These protections are enforced by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and typically include atmospheric testing, proper ventilation, continuous monitoring, and specialized worker training.
When serious fires occur in these environments, investigators often look closely at whether those safety procedures were properly followed.
Common Causes of Industrial Fires Are Almost Always Preventable
Having successfully represented thousands of industrial workers injured in refinery, chemical plant, and oilfield accidents, our attorneys know one thing: fires like this do not happen without a cause. In many cases, they are the result of preventable safety failures, including:
- Inadequate training or inexperienced workers
- Failure to test for flammable or toxic vapors
- Poor ventilation inside a tank or confined space
- Unsafe welding, cutting, or other “hot work” activities
- Equipment failures or poor maintenance
- Failure to follow required safety procedures or properly supervise the work
For that reason, the ongoing investigation into this tragedy will be critical in determining exactly what happened and whether the incident could have been prevented.
When a Workplace Death May Lead to a Wrongful Death Claim
Following a fatal workplace incident, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim—particularly if the death was caused by negligence, unsafe working conditions, or safety violations.
In Texas, these claims may arise when:
- An employer fails to follow required safety standards
- A third party (such as a contractor or equipment manufacturer) contributes to the incident
- Dangerous conditions are known but not addressed
A thorough investigation is critical to determining what went wrong and who may be responsible. And while nothing will ever make up for the loss of your loved one, a wrongful death lawsuit is the only way to ensure that the negligent parties are held accountable, that others aren’t killed from the same dangerous conduct in the future, and that you and your family have the financial resources to care and provide for yourselves (and each other) in your loved one’s absence.
