Five people — including four Houston firefighters — were hospitalized early Sunday morning after an 18-wheeler slammed into a stopped fire truck on the Eastex Freeway in Montgomery County.
Big Rig Slammed Into Engine 104 While Responders Worked a Separate Crash
The crash occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 30, on the Eastex Freeway (US 59 North) at Northpark Drive (Exit 151).
According to the Houston Fire Department, Engine 104 was blocking traffic at the entrance ramp while crews worked a separate accident when the 18-wheeler, traveling northbound, plowed directly into the parked fire truck.
Houston Fire Chief Thomas Muñoz shared photos of the aftermath on social media and emphasized just how dangerous these roadway operations can be for first responders.
Four Firefighters Hospitalized, Expected to Recover
Three firefighters and an engineer operator were transported by ambulance with multiple serious injuries.
The 18-wheeler driver was also hospitalized, though their condition has not yet been confirmed.
Chief Muñoz stated: “Blocking traffic on the freeway is one of the most dangerous tasks we do. We’re extremely grateful that every member of Engine 104 is expected to recover, and we ask drivers to slow down and move over when they see emergency crews working.”
Crash Under Investigation
The Houston Police Department is investigating the cause of the collision. No official findings have been released.
However, having successfully represented thousands of truck and 18-wheeler crash victims, our 18-wheeler accident lawyers know all too well that crash like this are almost always preventable — and typically occur when trucking companies and their drivers:
- Cut corners on safety to protect profits
- Hiring inexperienced and unqualified drivers
- Fail to provide proper training
- Fail to brake in time
- Drive while fatigued or distracted
- Speed to meet unrealistic delivery deadlines
Nighttime collisions are especially common when big rig drivers are fatigued. According to the National Transportation Safety Board, truck driver fatigue may cause or contribute to as many as 40% of the trucking-related crashes that occur on U.S. roads and highways every year.
A truck driver who has been awake for 18 hours shows impairments comparable to drunk driver with a 0.08 BAC, severely slowing reaction time and decision-making.
Fatigue-related trucking crashes are most likely to occur between midnight and 6 a.m. — the same window when this Montgomery County crash occurred.
