A worker was tragically killed Friday morning after a crane’s tow straps failed, causing a heavy load to fall on him at a job site in Harris County, Texas.
Tow Straps Fail, Dropping Heavy Load on Worker
The fatal crane accident occurred just after 7:00 a.m. on December 12 at a work site located at 2201 N. Sam Houston Parkway, between Veterans Memorial Drive and Ella Boulevard.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the worker was operating a crane while a large parcel was suspended by tow straps. The straps reportedly broke without warning, causing the load to fall directly onto the worker. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity or the name of the employer. The incident remains under active investigation.
Deadly Crane Accidents Have Surged in Texas
Cranes are a fixture on Texas job sites — from refineries and petrochemical plants to ports, industrial facilities, and major infrastructure projects. But with the ability to lift massive loads and weighing tens to hundreds of tons, cranes also pose extreme dangers when safety protocols are ignored or equipment fails.
Texas consistently leads the nation in fatal crane accidents, claiming more than three times as many lives as any other state since 2011. Most of these tragedies are entirely preventable and stem from:
- Equipment failure or improper maintenance
- Overloaded cranes or rigging failures
- Inadequate training or supervision
- Pressure to rush work or cut corners
When companies prioritize productivity and profits over worker safety, the consequences are often devastating—and irreversible.
