A Texas worker was severely injured early yesterday morning when an explosion erupted at the ChampionX plant in Crowley, Tarrant County.
Industrial Furnace Caught Fire at ChampionX Harbison-Fischer Plant
Fire crews and EMTs responded to a report of an explosion at the ChampionX Harbison-Fischer manufacturing facility, located in the 900 block of North Crowley Road, at about 5:45 a.m. on Monday, January 5th. According to media reports, the blast apparently occurred when an industrial furnace caught fire.
The unidentified worker sustained severe burns to his arms and torso and was airlifted to the burn unit at Parkland Hospital in Dallas. So far, officials have not released any updates on his condition.
“Our thoughts are with the injured employee and their loved ones during this challenging time,” the spokesman said in an email to local media outlets. “We are working closely with local authorities as they investigate the cause of the incident. Similarly, we are conducting our own internal investigation into the matter. At this stage, those investigations are ongoing.”
No other injuries were reported, and damage to the plant was minimal.
Louisiana Worker Burned in Earlier ChampionX Fire
Headquartered in Woodlands, Texas, ChampionX produces chemistry technologies, artificial lift systems, and highly engineered equipment for the oil and gas industry. The plant in Crowley specifically produces rod-lift equipment and related production chemicals.
Unfortunately, Monday’s incident wasn’t the first time a ChampionX worker suffered burns at one of the company’s facilities. In April 2022, a flash fire broke out at the ChampionX warehouse near Lafayette, Louisiana, leaving one employee with second-degree burns to his hands and wrist.
According to media reports, the Louisiana fire was ignited by static electricity while the injured worker was mixing chemicals inside the warehouse.
Workplace Injuries Caused by Fires and Explosions
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI), “explosions and fires” accounted for 104 fatal work injuries in 2023 — one of the recognized categories of fatal workplace events tracked by the agency. The consequences are often immediate and catastrophic, leaving workers with little time to escape or protect themselves from the threat of:
- Severe thermal burns, including second- and third-degree burns that may require skin grafts and long-term hospitalization
- Smoke inhalation or chemical exposure injuries can cause lasting lung damage
- Blunt-force trauma from blast pressure or flying debris, including broken bones and internal injuries
- Traumatic brain injuries caused by being thrown or struck during an explosion
- Permanent scarring or mobility limitations that prevent a return to physical work
Workers who suffer severe burns—defined as second-degree burns covering more than 10 percent of the body or third- and fourth-degree burns—in a plant explosion or fire are likely to face:
- Lengthy stays in hospital burn units
- Multiple surgical procedures, including skin grafts
- Ongoing wound care to prevent infection
- Physical therapy to regain strength and range of motion
- Permanent scarring or loss of function, particularly when burns affect the arms, hands, or torso
Not surprisingly, severe, work-related burn injuries are far more likely to result in extended time off the job than many other types of workplace injuries. In fact, from 2020 through 2022, the Bureau tracked more than 11,800 thermal burn injuries serious enough to require days away from work. Over 3,500 chemical burn and corrosion injuries also required time away from work during that period.
