Common Causes of Head and Traumatic Brain Injuries
Head and Traumatic Brain Injuries are generally caused by one of two forces:
- The force from a direct blow or contact to the head, like when you are slammed against the ground or another object during a workplace accident or explosion, or;
- The force that’s transmitted through the white matter and axons in your your brain from the (1) “lateral” forces experienced when your head quickly moves forward and backward (from whiplash) or the (2) “rotational” forces that cause your brain to move sideways, within your skull, during a rollover accident, for example.
Because the “lateral” and “rotational” forces that damage the brain are caused by the internal movement of the brain within your skull, it’s extremely common for accident victims to sustain Mild and Moderate Traumatic Brain Injuries in the ABSENCE of any direct contact or trauma to your head.
As a result, many Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries—which can cause severe and even permanent functional and cognitive impairment—go unnoticed by the accident victim and their physicians.

Most Common Types of Head Injuries
Head injuries typically come in one of three classifications:
- a closed head injury
- a penetrating head injury , or
- a perforating head injury,
A closed head injury occurs when force is exerted on the head either directly, through physical contact between the skill and another object, or indirectly through sudden movement of the brain within the skull from the lateral and rotational forces that occur during whiplash and rollover accidents.
A penetrating head injury is one in which the skull is breached by an object but the object remains within the skull and does not exit the other side.
A perforating head injury is one in which the skull is breached by an object that then leaves the skull causing an exit wound.
While the human skull provides adequate protection for most minor incidents, major head trauma can cause a variety of life-changing injuries, including:
- Bleeding of the Brain (hemorrhaging);
- Skull fractures;
- Hematomas (blood clots);
- Lacerations; and
- Stretching and tearing of the Axons (referred to as “diffuse axonal injury”).
In order to properly diagnose the nature and extent of your head injury, medical professionals generally employ a variety of diagnostic technologies to assist them, including CT scans, MRIs and x-rays.
Unfortunately, many Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries—which, despite their name, can cause permanent impairment and disability—are often overlooked by doctors and in the ER, because they are not visible on most CT scans and MRIs.
